ELK GROVE, CA - BloodSource announces the opening of its new Elk Grove Donor Center on July 28 at 9267 Laguna Springs Dr., Suite 100. The easily accessible facility - from both Highway 99 and Laguna Blvd. - has triple the space of its current location at Bruceville Road which opened in 2000. The new donor center will have additional staff and nearly double the number of donor beds. By increasing its donor center capacity, BloodSource and its Elk Grove donors will be able to help more patients.
The need for blood this summer has been greater with decreased collections and increased patient usage leading to an unprecedented critical public appeal for more blood donations. While donors have responded generously, there is still a projected deficit of nearly 3,000 donations in July. The new BloodSource Elk Grove can accommodate significantly more donors to help with this need and BloodSource encourages all donors – new and current - to schedule an appointment to save lives soon.
Donors at BloodSource Elk Grove may give whole blood, red blood cells, platelets and/or plasma. A new type of blood donation called a source plasma donation will also be available in Elk Grove. Source plasma donors donate plasma that is combined with other donations to develop lifesaving plasma-based medicines. These medicines may be needed only once for emergency need or perhaps for a lifetime, helping those with immune deficiencies, neurological disorders, blood diseases and more. Eligibility varies for different types of blood donations. Additionally, those donors who have had a recent tattoo in California will no longer be subject to a one-year deferred from blood donation.
John Phillips, an Elk Grove resident and plasma-based medicine recipient due to an autoimmune disease called idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura (ITP), encourages all who can to donate blood. “Like me, you don’t know if you will be the one in need some day,” said Phillips. “I work to raise awareness about the need for blood donation wherever I can, whether at Cosumnes River College where I am a student now or at organizations helping those with autoimmune disorders.”
In addition to saving lives, donors who donate between opening day and August 31 will receive a commemorative T-shirt and MyBloodSource Rewards, redeemable online for a variety of great items. With no artificial substitute for blood and less than 5% of eligible donors actually donating, according to the 2013 National Blood Collection and Utilization Survey Report, it’s more important than ever to donate blood regularly.
